Up until the late 90s, weather observers and forecasters were trained at Chanute AFB, IL. We had Air Force, Navy and Marines in our classes back then? If you did, do you remember the 'Prairie Lands'? And White Hall?

The military has the Walmart attitude. Build it and leave it. What a shame to abandon such a place. Sometimes the military waste money by going somewhere else to do business. I have never been there but I'll bet it was a vibrant place at one time. I went to Flight School at Fort Wolters, Texas and now it's all growed up and unkept. It makes you feel bad.

It does sir because the collegial atmosphere was especially heady and at the same time a lot fun. Miss it still.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL Thanks, Joe. Breaks my heart and we still have history and hopefully after the changes, that the new commander puts an emphasis on Air Weather Service.

I was there two years ago, the old dorms are still there, but they are a total mess, even the front lawn, where we had so much fun, was overgrown

WX Obs School Aug-Oct 1980, Forcaster School May-Oct 1982. Personally, I hated Chanute. I enjoyed my course work, but could not stand Rantoul or the ATC

I remember walking around outside the base on foot only to get yelled at by idiots leaning out the windows calling me names. LOL.

Just looking at the photos of the hallways brought back memories of wrapping our arms in saran wrap so we didn't smear our streamlines during upper air analysis in August...NO Air Conditioning...lol

I was at Chanute AFB from Dec 18, 1980- April 7, 1982. I was wondering if anyone remembered the coldest windchill at Chanute that winter. We had some doozies. Lol
