If a unit's goals are not aligned with the mission, the unit commander has failed his or her duties. The mission is dictated from higher, the units goals should be aligned with the next higher units commanders goals, and both should be aligned for mission.

You summarized my point. If not aligned, there will be problems.

On goal alignment a couple of questions:
1) Do they still teach the 5 paragraph order (SMEAC)?
2) Do they still teach the Commander's Intent as part of the 5 Paragraph order?

On dealing with Marines whose personal goals do not line up unit missions:

Most units I served in had a "Bird Swap". It was run entirely by SNCO's. When the Company level chain of Command lost faith in a Marine, we'd exchange our bird for someone else's bird. We tried to do it with as little information exchange as possible, to give the Marine a "sort of clean" slate. Usually the SgtMaj and 1stSgt's (The Supreme Council) got involved. They would conduct some "come to Jesus" sessions (not boot camp 2.0) and have adult conversations with these Marines about the course they were on, the consequences of the course, and asked the Marines how they could positively contribute to the command.

The Supreme council would provide input about "creative" employment of the birds. About 3 out 5 Marines proved to be "birds" in their new command. I won't tell you it produced any Marines of the century, but it did allow some Marines that were headed for GOS or worse discharges to adequately finish out their enlistment. Also the Marines that succeeded usually made some significant contributions to the "quality of life" of their fellow Marines.

Maj John Bell , we called it the SWAT Team. Special Working party Assault Team. If they were indifferent to the assistance, then they got to paint the Sgt's Maj rocks while awaiting EAS/GOS.

Spartacus had a problem with OBJ. His OBJ was to escape Italy while his follower's OBJ was sacking Rome. The rest is history.

As this shows good judgement, today's leadership is almost non-existent. The Army is wrought with PC and liberalism, the downfall of this country. The senior leadership does not mentor, they hold 8 - 10 hour meetings with nothing accomplished. Junior leaders lie to keep face and then turn their backs on the NCO's and enlisted. They also tell the senior leaders to pound sand on orders given and the senior leaders do not UCMJ them. The insolence, lack of honor and good order, the lack of discipline, accountability and responsibility are abundant. Leaders of today do not understand operations, the OPORD, or how to manage their units.

You may be right. I retired in 1990, I don't know much about the current Army. The pre-volunteer Army in the 70's was bad enough with drugs, etc. However, the principles of leadership haven't changed.

LTC Monte Anderson - I seem to recall in 1974 DA directed all cmds that in thirty days everyone, Army wide would take urinalysis test. I couldn't believe how may soldier E4 and below went into rehab. If you were E5 and above no rehab discharges soared, including Officers.

I don't recall that but, then, I don't remember things too well. Drugs were bad until we started the random drug tests and the volunteer Army.

I understand your look at it, but would ask as to whether or not you Cpl's, Sgt's and SSgt's felt undermined by this "tool" that was used?
