In 1797 6 US frigates were launched. The US did not have a large budget so it focused on quality vs quantity. I am no nautical expert so I can not indulge in what I do not know. I believe the ships hulls were 22 inch thick comprised of oak. In the war of 1812 it captured merchant ships and sunk British war ships. The British crews were astounded cannonballs at point blank range bounced off our ships. In one engagement the USS Constitution got into point blank range and the British ship could do nothing to defend herself so the British CPT surrendered his ship. The USS Constitution was dubbed Old Ironsides.

We had a small navy but we did win some at sea, the Great Lakes, and that crazy CPT who went to England to harass her ships.

For you one really great one not on that list(no way any list could be complete there are so many.) was Commander Ernest J Evans the Captain of the USS Johnston and the first Native American I believe to command a US Navy ship. The deeds of the Johnston and Captain Evans should be mandatory reading for any surface officer and sailor in the US Navy! One of the destroyers who went toe to toe with Japanese battleships! I love his quote upon taking command to the crew. "This is going to be a fighting ship. I intend to go in harm's way, and anyone who doesn't want to go along had better get off right now".
