Jack, I am glad you were able to find a post that met some of your needs, but I can assure you, it is not like that and the posts that welcome post 9/11 vets are VERY few and far between.

I've noticed a lot of people saying "life" member of VFW and "annual" member of the Legion. Was the main factor the great discounts that VFW gave us on life membership when OEF/OIF kicked off?

MAJ (Join to see) I've had the same question myself. I guess you have to compare the cost of paying the annual dues for however many years you think you'll live/be a member vs the single payment for life membership (which varies with age). It seems to be a variation on the old theme of "you pays your money and you takes your chances"...

My VFW life membership was about $450 when I got it in 2008. A Legion life membership would cost me over twice that today, even with a discount.

I am on a limited budjet, plus I feel that I payed my "dues" already by being in service.

Yes, Life Member of both and Life Member of the DAV. Past post commander of the first two, as well.

I somehow fell between the cracks in the system and I'm told I do not qualify for membership to the American Legion. My dates of service (July 85 - April 88) are not acceptable to get in.

Got out of the Navy in '70, sold my dress blues on the way home and didn't look back. IN '87 visited The Wall. Three months later I was on the board of Vietnam Veterans of San Diego (VVSD.) VVSD, founder of Stand Down events for homeless vets just seemed a better way to go.

I am a member of both the Legion and VFW. I can see why young vets are turned off by the these groups because the "Bar" seems to be the face of many posts. They are often dark seedy places with drunks giving you the stink eye. My solution is to get involved, get in a position to make things change with like minded people. I am not a Vietnam vet or OEF. I'm one of those guys from the lesser known Gulf War so I don't fit in either way. If you don't like it, then change it!

I am a member of Caldwell, Idaho VFW even though I live in Denmark. Idaho is where I grew up and decided to keep my membership there. Not too many of us here in Denmark, and I'd probably never get to Germany's post as it's in southern Germany.

I have been a LIFE Member with the VFW for the last 10+ years. I haven't checked out the American Legion yet to see what they have to offer but I plan on it real soon.
