We broke the spirits of Native Americans by slaughtering them, dividing land for the various tribes only to have the land taken away from them. They were forced to live in reservations but they often went hungry. There is a sad but inspiring story of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce tribe. He fought a brilliant campaign against the army for 1200 miles. His main objective was to join Sitting Bull in Canada. One morning the army attacked the village and the frightened horses ran off. He was just 40 miles from the border, and his dream for freedom was shattered.
