"Officials fromt the 1st Armored Division are investigating an incident involving an M1 Abrams main battle tank accidently firing on another tank during a training exercise at Fort Bliss on July 20.
The training incident, during an M1 Abrams tank qualification exercise, was first reported by Defence Blog and confirmed to Military Times by Army officials."
As an armored cavalryman who has done his share of Abrams and Bradley gunneries, I'm in disbelief how such a incident could have occurred. I will definitely be looking for the follow up reporting on the details after the investigation is near completion.

Less a theory and more just a note: it could have been intentional. As I said, I haven't been following it too closely, so I don't know if that's already been ruled out or not.

Good thing it wasn't the main gun. Still come a seeing blood on the turret is very disheartening. I hope the armor crew member makes a full recovery.

What makes you think it wasn’t the main gun? I didn’t in see the article it specifying which gun system had been engaged. Considering the tanks were approximately 2600 m apart I’m gonna assume it was a training round from the main gun.

MAJ James Woods I saw the earliest report and I thought you had the same report. Yes, it was a main gun practice round. This is horrible! The TC or the Gunner fired it. SMH
