Griffin has faced harsh words from critics in recent years for not doing enough to hold VA leadership accountable for problems regarding patient wait times, overprescribing by physicians, and medical records manipulation.

On Monday, a group called VA Truth Tellers blasted Griffin for a "pattern of whitewashing and deceit" and called for his resignation. Several lawmakers have also publicly berated the office in recent months for working too closely with VA officials instead of publicly exposing potential wrongdoing.

Good. I actually can respect a person who steps down when they are not doing the job. I guess he was not really acting the position?

How about we make a permanent position that reports to someone who has the power and authority to fix the problems? Oh, I am just such a silly duck.

Anytime you appoint a general to such a position he is told not to make waves.

The only reason a problem exists is because no one wants to solve it. The VA has been the target of criticism and cynicism and investigation for generations of veterans and a thorn in the side of every presidential administration since Harry Truman (maybe even earlier) yet it and the care it provides remain problems. The white elephant is still in the room and isn't going anywhere soon because we keep feeding it. (or more likely starving it because we send the money it needs elsewhere)

Tell Obama to go sing "Amazing Grace" over at VA headquarters, maybe that will do something.

Can Medicare handle it SPC Jan Allbright, M.Sc., R.S.? I think that system is less broken than the VA but vets would be competing for the same resources in another underfunded system. If you tried to split it and say the less traumatic cases go to Medicare and the more traumatic go to the VA, could we get enough agreement over the dividing line - who goes where - and how much of the VA pot gets turned over to Medicare? That could be a start?

MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca I think we "broke" the VA when we opened to doors to all comers. Then add a couple nice big "presumptive" (Agent Orange and PTSD). Mix in having the baby boom hit the system.
Having Medicare available opens up more outlets. I haven't seen the "Choice" making big differences.

SPC Jan Allbright, M.Sc., R.S. We've also created such an influx of veterans since 9/11 that the system is just overwhelmed. Thanks to medical advances more vets are surviving horrific wounds that would have killed them back in WWII. I technically should have a claim in there myself but when you get put in the lowest priority and then you see all the vets that need much more help than you do, you kind of let it slide. If they can't provide the care itself, or the care needed can be provided elsewhere they should at least give vets the option to seek outside care, but again the red tape to approve the care and/or medical procedures would still wear that system down.

MAJ Robert (Bob) Petrarca - And still the government want single payer for medical care for all Americans. If that ends up with the proficiency such as the postal service, it will resemble a form of genocide

And they often turn away veterans who have a mental health crisis.
