Perhaps what we need is a Real General?
I met Al Haig in Vietnam. He was a Battalion Commander of an Infantry Bn in the 1st Infantry Div. Years later I was his beat cop

I remember this gaff; the day Al forgot just how far down the line he was on the Presidential Successor list!
I've often wondered if General Haig was responding at a specific point or place in time, such as a meeting where he actually was the Senior Official at the meeting and he felt it necessary to announce his seniority, rather than mistakenly attempting to jump the successor list? Given the vitriolic level of the anti-Reagan Media at the time (Oh, to go back to those days when the Media hadn't gone off into the super deep end of Liberalism yet!) , was too much made out of the General's statement?

Al Haig jumped the gun on that one - the president and other successors were still alive and kicking. Warmest Regards, Sandy :)

No, they were running around in circles in a panic. To people in the military it sounded routine, to civilians it was 7 days in May

Too many politicians dipping into the pie and saying how the kitchen should be ran. Real Generals are harder and harder to come by
