An interesting take on being a veteran, though I would say ex has the negative connotation of ex-boy/girlfriend, ex-wife/husband so maybe former is a better way of explaining it?

Steven, I am a semi-broken warrior but I am still very much a sheepdog. I am just retired and telling stories now. I can't change the fact I am a knuckle dragging barbarian, its who I am. I just let the younger, tougher, and not broken ones do it now.

Nah......it's like joining the mafia.....you're never really out, once you're in. It's a lifetime commitment.

I think it's more of a personal choice for people. I'm prior enlisted. Soon I'll be a former Soldier. I like the "former" for myself.
