The screenplay by Kubrick, Michael Herr, and Gustav Hasford was based on Hasford's novel The Short-Timers (1979). The storyline follows a platoon of U.S. Marines through their boot camp training in Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina, primarily focusing on two privates, Joker and Pyle, who struggle under their abusive drill instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, and the experiences of two of the platoon's Marines in Vietnamese cities of Da Nang and Huế during the Tet Offensive of the Vietnam War. One of my cousins (retired Marine GySgt) is always reminding me of how rough Marine boot camp was in the era. If it was anything approaching what it is like in "Full Metal Jacket", I'd have to agree. I remind him that he never went Airborne. Lol

As a former USAF Recruiter, my office was located with the other branches. At that time basic was 6 weeks going on 7 weeks, the latter week was classes on budgeting, checking, and other issue of a busy adult. We needed to have basic knowledge of the other's basic training. I was fortunate to made some fine friends with these guys. But when someone walked into the building, the gloves came off.

It actually worked as a recruiting tool for several young men I got to know later after I ETSed. They loved it so much ans were inspired by it. They were my daughters age.
