It is a CONUS PCS move so we will have to pay the costs but any suggestions/recommendations? It looks like Amerifreight is a good choice.

The reviews seem good for 1flatrate and, since you have had good experience with them, we are going to try to use them. I am not really sure where and how the vehicle would get delivered since my son's schedule after reporting in is unknown. Can the carrier have access to the base (my son will be starting IBOLC and staying the Norton neighborhood of East Main Post)? Could it be delivered to a car dealership (we could get his oil changed to keep the dealer happy)

They’ll work with you MAJ Jerry Murray and deliver wherever you want. If the driver is legal licensed and not a criminal, I believe the visitor center will issue passes for delivery guys and movers. At least they did 5-6 years ago when I was there. Worst case scenario they leave vehicle at visitor center and he picks it up with an Uber.

I've shopped antique cars several times across country. If you are going for open transport (i.e. you are ok with wind and rain getting to your car) most of the vendors are will get your car there undamaged. Because of that I've always gone out to bid. There are several sites where you can put in your timeframe, start and end locations and some info about the vehicle and they will send the information to several vendors to get pricing. I go for a reasonable price and good reviews (i.e. not just the cheapest).

Sorry about my part in having this go sideways. But I would like to follow up on what I have found out so others better understand the current issues with shipping a car for Conus move. First, for most your orders will not cover it so you will have to pay for it (maybe if your have orders allowing a full house move but for this initial move the orders only allowed 600 lbs. If you drive you get reimburse for your costs driving including lodging. Second, it doesn't seem anyone can deal directly with a carrier anyone and everything goes thru brokers and a bid system. And it appears it costs significantly more to narrow the window of when the car is picked up and when it would be delivered. In our case it went from $995 to $1500 (with a broker with high ratings). Third, the schedule of pickup and delivery can have a number of days variation so it may be necessary. End result is financially driving is better and if someone has to managed $ closely then driving is better. Usually the case if your income is simply your military pay. However, driving presents it own issues. Clearly the driving plan must include extra time to cover reasonable delays enroute. And for reporting to an initial IBOLC class,. being late is not an option so add more extra timing plan. As I mentioned in a previous post, the car needs to be replaced but what it is going to be replaced by will be determined by the next assignment which is less than a year away. Having this car break down enroute presents major logistical problems (how long for the car to be repaired, what about personal items being transported in the mean time (yup, I had a cylinder head gasket go while towing a trailer). Any driving cross country in January?? Wouldn't bother me - I spend four year in Vermont. But my son has never driven in snow. And the financial issues of driving vs shipping: we are just lucky that is not a real concern for us. I apologized for not making our unique case clearer.
