Another Military Memory. When I got my "Good Conduct Medal" The Colonel pinning it on me said: "I don't see very many of these in the Infantry. What's wrong with you?"
I couldn't help it, I broke out laughing.

SGT Kevin Hughes - as one of the members of my squad used to say: “three years is a long time to behave.”

Yes. I think he was more amazed by the simple fact that I never drank alcohol. He just couldn’t believe that I never even tried a beer. He thought that was probably the main reason I got the metal. He thought most mess ups were just due to alcohol.

SGT Kevin Hughes I've known for years that bad decisions are perfectly capable of being made while being 100% sober.

The algorithm I somehow defeated was that despite wearing Marine dress blues quite often: I didn't make any panties drop until a couple of years after I initially EASd.

SGT Kevin Hughes - I would have to say the Colonel was correct, although not all stupidity was alcohol related. I was six or seven years older than most of my squad mates and had gotten over my binge drinking in college, and usually the ranking man, so I normally played the adult in the crowd. Most of the guys hitting the EM Club or one of the Clubs outside the Gate went there to get hammered. It was hard enough keeping the Squad out of trouble stone cold sober.

The Officer Corp did it's share of drinking in the pre-Desert Storm Army. I pulled bartender duty as a Candidate a couple of times. Eagles and above, Bourbon or Scotch, and do you want ice. Quite asking if they wanted a double after the first couple of times.
