I received news that I might not have made the zone for CPT by 1 day. What are some other ways I can get my promotion outside of the board?

1LT Johnson, don't rush that promotion. Especially being in the Reserves try to learn from every opportunity. I spent 7 years as a LT prior to pinning on CPT both active and reserve time combined. You have more positions available as a LT or CPT than as a MAJ or higher closer to home. You can potentially get yourself promoted outt of a job...Just food for thought. Keep doing your best, be patient and take care of your Soldiers Good luck!

LTC Mohor is right. Don’t rush promotions in any Reserve Capacity... you then have to make the next one squeaky clean. As a Captain, I was called back to AD, did an outstanding job... more medals and recommended early promoted up to 05. The Reserves play different games... I had the rare opportunity to get a hometown Command, which was sent to the Philippines. My old BC from AD called me to come back...would have an early promote and a good shot of going up... I was Infantry. I took the Philippine assignment... a bastardized Command at best. The Reserve BC gave me an illegal order. I found out I was the 2nd CO to get this same order. The former CO was relieved, I was brought in.
A meeting was held in Arizona... an 07, an 06, 3 O5’s and all their boys. (And the IG) were there. Fortunately the O6 wrote on a napkin how to do this act. I put the napkin in my coat pocket and left. I asked that the order be put in writing... I joined the other CO and was relieved of Command. It was time to go, as I was 30% VA disabled, and it was being upped. A Federal court ruled the order illegal, after I was 70% then 100% VA disabled (Enlisted in Vietnam, combat wounds).
Long story short, dot’t push your rank, unless you work with the big boys or possibly an academy grad... I was not a college grad.
That napkin saved my bacon, as someone at the Pentagon asked for it. My record and relief were erased, but I never went beyond Captain. Be very careful in the Reserves when an Officer.

Actually you'll learn something from the board you're not in. They typically do some above/below zone picks. If you are not picked, that tells you that you are not the shiniest star out there, hence are in the next pack. Therefore it's important to be known as the "Go To" and pay attention to the kind of paper the board sees. Promotion rate to O-3 is very high, but starts bottlenecking at O-4. One thing you can do is be the S-1 type people in other shops want to see.

Everyone has to wait their time. Did you make the secondary zone? I'm a little confused why a 1LT at the edge of the zone for CPT doesn’t know the rules for promotion. That's the way this lold solider sees it."
