11 General George Patton Quotes That Show His Strategic Awesomeness

He was a true military genius. He had one week to turn around a US Army that had never won a battle in North Africa. A week after taking command of US forces he defeated a large German mechanized unit with infantry, mines, and tank destroyers. The Germans thought they were making good progress until they hit the minefield. They lost momentum and our tank destroyers hit them on both flanks. We won that battle.

In Sicily Payton conducted a huge amphibious operation. The German army was reeling and beat feet to Port Messina to escape. Patton was so relentless that he he did two more amphibious landings to flank the German Army. They barely escaped.

He landed his 100,000 soldier Army Group after D-Day. He was able to push his army group by using fighter planes on his flanks and the front.

He had the ability to see what resources he had and develop requisite tactics. He could see and think what we mortal men could not. I think it was natural to him.

General Patton is absolutely on my A-List (7th Army) and I loved the quote: “A good plan, violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.” I think it parallels a later USAF Col. John Boyd (Korea/Vietnam who later in his career developed war strategies and tactics we use today begining with the Gulf War. He's well known for (among other things) what's called an OODA Loop. The Patton quote I cited is a core concept in OODA.
