That's a great question that will certainly vary from "expert to expert". I used to own the time-honored household favorite, the Winchester Model '94 in .30-30. It was at one time touted as the caliber that has accounted for more whitetail deer than any other in the United States. Don't know if that's still the accepted truth or not, these days.

And to think I sold my Remington pump 30-06! It wasn't fun to shoot anymore. The Mossberg Flex MVP in 556 is a lot nicer to my shoulder.

MSgt Dale Johnson I never shot one beyond 150 yrds.yards. The places I hunt in N. GA, it is difficult to find anywhere where I would shoot further than 200 yrds. The past year I mostly hunted with my bow.

Many of these I haven't seen since I was a teenager. My first rifle was a Winchester .22 LR, Long, Short pump fondly called a gallery gun. Still have it.
