Oh Trust me, this was accurate down to the bottom line. Entered in Jan 1973. This was exact depiction without fluff. GySgt Emry was not reading from a script. They let him go native. Now for the scene where the private shots him, that was for the finality. We didn't carry weapons in the barracks. Made for TV. But other than that, its without imagination. I retired as a Gunny. don't hold a candle to this Marine!

Although in 1983, the DI’s were smart enough to
Nit allowed females to take weapons or ammo into the barracks!

I have four cousins who all went through Boot Camp and they loved this movie and are still proud to be called "Marine". They went away as some of the wildest American youth and came back as disciplined fighting men who we were proud to show off down at the Marine Corp Recruiting Station near our town. As for me I joined the Army.

I saw the movie long after entering the army, even though the movie was about the marine basic, it was very similer to my boot camp, we even had a pvt. pyle, his name was Walton, dude was 100 lbs of bubblegum, we had 4 DIs, and a senior, one DI was very similer to gunny, and would knock the shit out of you if you needed it, I got it once, steel pot to the top of my head, kinda hurt, but it got the point across, chambers was his name, e-6, badd ass, nam vet, no doubt he had issues, we also had a younger e-6 named moore, serious DI, airborn puke, young and full of piss and vinager, if a plane flew over all operations had to shut down cause ds moore had a hard on, and god forbid he saw a unit jump from a c-130, omg, dude had a woody for it so bad, anyway, bout 4 weeks into boot camp, Walton, skin flint ass comes up to ds moore, in front of all of us, requested to go on sick call, Walton had a lump in his belly, ds moore sent him packing, bout 30 mnts later old Walton comes back, hands the sick call slip to ds moore, and ds moore flips the hell out, laughing his ass off, RTD ! return to duty, ROFLMAO ! Walton has developed a muscle ! oh my god, we had transformed his ass into a real grunt ! by the time boot camp ended, old Walton had finely figured it out and become a man, he had 2 muscles then in his tummy, lol, I saw Walton a couple weeks later in AIT, dude was advancing like a champ, all it took was us guys not giving up on him, we drug his ass through half the road marches, I know of 4 weeks worth we had to drag Walton to the front of the line, let him go and fall in line, took turns doing it every march, by the 5th week, he had it down pat, and stayed up with us, never had to drag him again, he went on to serve a few years, I lost track of him, but I do know he made a good soldier and was a better man for it, it shown in his face, last I saw of him, he was about 160, and fit as a soldier could be ! don't ever give up on a pyle, he may be the one that saves you in the end.

Love this movie......but I will admit that I rarely watch the rest of the movie after the boot camp scenes.
