Lawyers for Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the soldier facing court-martial after being held by the Taliban for five years, are considering calling Donald Trump to testify to show their client cannot get a fair trial, Bloomberg reports.
The GOP presidential front-runner has publicly called Bergdahl a "no-good traitor" and called for his execution. Trump's testimony could highlight the inaccuracies of his public statements -- Bergdahl has not been charged with treason -- and allow Bergdahl's lawyers to show how the presidential candidate has tainted public perception of their client among potential jurors in the case.

This is why you keep your mouth shut in the run up to the trial. With McCain threatening congressional action if things don't go a certain way and the leading GOP candidate spouting vitriol for political points, you just feed the defense ammo. Enough of these incidents and the case against a fair trial being possible will be pretty rock solid.

A few thoughts:
- If this post is accurate then it is a hail Mary from Bergdahl's lawyers.
- Officially, Trump has no status right now. He is not POTUS, not an elected official, and not a member of DoD. Why should any of Trump's statements carry more or less weight than any other American?
- Potential jurors will be military Soldiers, not the general public.
- I do not believe that any military judge or eventual court martial member will consider anything other than what is presented within a court martial. The average Soldier is better informed and better educated than the average American. In the civilian world, it can unfortunately be the most lazy or stupid who end up on jury duty. That is not the case within the military world.

No, I believe in the legal system. No political figure is going to help influence a Military trial. He left his post.
