"Zero Tolerance" requires zero judgment. Not only have we removed civics classes from school curricula, but also now teach disrespect for the rule of law by applying "justice" without prudence. If students defend themselves from bullies they are punished equally with the aggressor. In this case the student learned an invaluable lesson in bureaucracy: You will be punished if you fail to observe rules and regulations regardless of outcome. What a wonderful lesson his classmates will learn as well. No hall pass? No excuse.

The good samaritan act is legal on the streets. Why not in schools? Some of these schools are run by tyrants rather then comment sense. That teacher and the school board should be thanking that student. If the girl would have died where she lay, they would be whistling a different tune. They would also be looking at losing their jobs and a hefty lawsuit.

Treat it like a vacation or a long weekend.

Sometimes you take a "slap on the wrist" for the greater good. Sometimes the powers that be have to hand out some punishment because they have to show they are in charge.

When it really boils down to it, ask "Did I do the right thing? Was it worth it? If so? #%^#^ it!" Just like he said when he picked her up and took her to the nurses office.

My oldest son was an elementary school coach. He quit teaching because he was afraid he would get into trouble if he was seen touching a boy or girl, like playing with them in a kidding way. But, if something like this happened, I guarantee he would have done the same thing this boy did. Common sense should take over rather than worrying about punishment.
