Never', EVER, say your a combat vet if you are not! That is another form of Stolen Valor, whether your wearing combat awards or decorations or not. For God Sake, don't say that to get elected to any office, even dog catcher, or while you are in office. The real Combat Vets who have experienced combat deserve more decency from you for how they have been changed by what they saw, heard, felt, smelt, and experienced, and did, while in actually combat.

Correct men if I'm wrong, but if a Vietnam Vet served "in country" they are referred to as a "Vietnam Vet," but if they were in the military at the time, but did not spend any time "in country" they are referred to a "Vietnam Era Vet."
If this is correct, then there is a US Congressman that has been identifying himself as a "Vietnam Vet" for YEARS, yet he did not spend one second in theater. How is that any different?
BTW - the Congressman is none other than that beacon moderation, Jim McDermott (D-WA)

I'm not sure that's an actual distinction or just something they do. My Dad was always careful to describe himself as a Vietnam Era vet (he was a radar tech in the Navy) but I'm not sure it's any kind of actual official thing.

I don't get why he would do it. In this age of lightning-fast fact verification, did he really think no one would check out his claims?

It's wrong to claim anything that you didn't earn. Politicians should know that as soon as you claim anything, somebody will check what said. Can't blame a "staffer", he's responsible for what is said in his name. Glad he's resigning.
