COLUMBIA, S.C. — Gov. Nikki Haley and South Carolina's military boosters want to end taxes on military retirement benefits.
Haley's budget calls for slicing $10 million from the state's coffers to pay for the cut. The plan would ultimately cost the state $33 million every year.
Doubters argue the idea isn't good tax policy because it narrows the state's tax base.
Supporters say it will attract military retirees looking for a second job after earning a pension for serving 20 years in uniform.
The push comes as lawmakers continue to wrangle over paying for the state's crumbling roads.
The measure passed the House unanimously last year, but it wasn't taken up in the Senate.

Tat is good news that Gov. Nikki Haley and South Carolina's military boosters want to end taxes on military retirement benefits SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. If they are successful I will certainly add SC to the list of military friendly states I would like to retire to.

I like the idea as a retiree, but I can see some serious issues with others who won't get the same treatment. Besides, this will only last a finite amount of time. With the rollout of the new retirement program, this proposal has as a guess 20 years worth of life in it? I really like it, but don't see it going anywhere.

My kind of Governor SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. And you are so right, taxes are killing all of us. This country should come up with a fair tax plan, one that is equal across the board. I think we will all be a lot better off for it.
