The OV-10 Bronco was used during Vietnam to hunt for insurgents and it is being utilized in the current campaign for the same reason. It's attribute of being able to take off from short rough airstrips quickly gives it a distinct advantage over other aircraft. Being able to react quickly aids ground forces by providing them support needed in their missions against insurgents.
Their deployment in support to operations is in some ways an experiment, "to determine if properly employed turbo-prop driven aircraft would increase synergy and improve coordination between the aircrew and ground commander" The military also wanted to learn if planes like this are better suited for these missions than the F-15 or F/A 18. Another advantage to the Broncos is that they are far less expensive to operate than the F-15 or F/A 18.
The money for this "experiment" was derived by diverting money from other programs.
During their 82 days of deployment they flew 120 combat missions.

SFC William Farrell - you scoot out the back of the cargo area while it's climbing straight up, and you need to get out before it can't climb anymore and stalls and/or banks.

MAJ (Join to see) - Thanks Captain, Ive seen them in Nam but never close up. I had no idea they eve had much a cargo area. Yeah for sure before it stalls. I stalled a plane once and threw it into a spin, good thing I had the instructor with me! Best!

Had to dig through some files, last guise I saw OV-10s in were the California Department of Forestry & Fire Protection. Aside from the Miramar airshow there were typically couple at the Ramona Airport when I would fly there.

CPT (Join to see) - thanks, I am guessing they are treated a whole lot better today than they were during their years in service. Shine & polish never applied to vehicles, just boots & brass as I recall it.
