High Wood - the Somme : World War One Battlefields
High Wood was one of the most fought over locations on the Somme battlefields in summer 1916, and many sites of interest can still be seen there today. The "Iron Harvest" - shells, bullets and the remains of shrapnel and barbed wire, can be seen around the area.

Wow! This was a great action. I can only imagine seeing the charging Lance being pointed at me and the terror it invoked. Even though a well placed rifle shot would remove that threat.
Brave men ride horses into the defense. Especially where machine guns ruled.
