‘Shooting an endangered animal is worse than murder’: Grief over gorilla’s death turns to outrage...

The killing of an endangered gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo to rescue a boy who fell into a dangerous enclosure unleashed an outpouring of grief on over the holiday weekend.
Within hours, that grief had turned to fury as critics questioned the zoo’s decision to kill the endangered 17-year-old gorilla, named Harambe, and called for the boy’s parents to be punished for not adequately supervising their child.
A Facebook page called “Justice for Harambe” received more than 41,000 “likes” within hours of its creation. The page’s description says it was created to “raise awareness of Harambe’s murder” and includes YouTube tributes and memes celebrating the western lowland gorilla and admonishing zoo officials.
“Shooting an endangered animal is worse than murder,” a commenter from Denmark named Per Serensen wrote on the page. “Soooo angry.”
Lt. Steve Saunders, a spokesman for the Cincinnati Police Department, told the Cincinnati Enquirer that they have no plans to charge the child’s parents.
That news didn’t stop tens of thousands from signing multiple online petitions calling for Cincinnati Child Protective Services to investigate the boy’s parents — who have not been identified — for negligence.
“I’m signing because a beautiful critically endangered animal was killed as a direct result of her failure to supervise her child,” one signee wrote. “I don’t blame the zoo staff for the decision they made, I’m sure they’re heartbroken.”
“If she’d watched her child he wouldn’t have been in the gorilla enclosure in the first place,” the commenter added.

LTC Stephen F., agreed the gorilla could have very well have hurt the child and the zoo did what they needed to do to save the child's life. I saw the video and was horrified by the violent way the child was handled, perhaps agitated by the screams of the people watching in fear. Its a shame for all involved.

If it didn't intend to hurt the child it is a big animal and it was stressed by the crowd. I commend the Cincinnati Zoo for their quick actions.

They should stand by their decision. There's a 4 year old boy who is still alive. Our sensitive society ALWAYS needs something to gripe about. Would anyone weep over this Gorilla if it had killed the child???? I'm guessing no.

SFC William Farrell I feel the right decision was made versus human life, but at the same time, I feel the Gorilla was in his domain and its sad to see a unique animal thats an endangered species die the way it did.

The comments that killing an endangered animal is worse than murder indicate twisted minds seem to elevate the worth of the creature, that has been out of its lowland environment for who knows how long, over human beings which are created in the image of God.
These comments are focused on punishing the mother of the child as they eulogize the gorilla that would have rightfully mauled any one of them which fell into in the enclosure.

LTC Stephen F. - As was i Sir and a very mischievous one at that! My late wife and I have also raised one very successful son whom Im proud of. I think in this case it is more than breaking free. In almost 40 years of the gorilla exhibit at the zoo, this has never happened and yet this child is able to break free and somehow manage to get into the cage. I can imagine there have been millions upon millions of visitors to this popular exhibit in nearly 40 years. From what I have also read, he was heard indicating prior to getting into the enclosure that he wanted to go into the water. While I don;t like to disagree with you Colonel, I do believe some lawyer is going to get ahold of them and get them to sue!

SFC William Farrell - I respect you opinion and don't expect my friends to agree with me all of the time. We are grieving recent deaths of friends of our sons and I am remembering my comrades-in-arms who are no longer walking on this earth but are buried under it.

LTC Stephen F. and these radicals complaining about this should do their research...these Gorilla's are NO LONGER ENDANGERED. ...but that is besides the point. The Gorilla clearly wasn't trying to protect the boy...and by the time the gorilla was shot and killed, he drug that boy and swung him around as if it were some kind of toy....this poor boy is going to be terribly traumatized...probably have night mares for years....maybe even PTSD.... the boy is lucky to be alive and extremely lucky he didn't end of with anything broken...and especially with the banging of his head while the gorilla climbed up tot the top. OH MY GOD! Seriously, these folks are INSANE!
