Thanks for sharing the link SSG Carlos Madden. My paternal grandfather and his brother fought with the British Army in WWI in the trench warfare of France and Belgium. Artillery and to a lesser extent aircraft bombing necessitated making underground hospitals in WWI. For similar reasons the VC built underground systems including medical facilities during the Vietnam war. I expect ISIS has don the same thing because of our capability to "see" 24/7 and strike quickly and in many cases silently.

SSG Carlos Madden Where I grew up was the site of Operation Flintlock in WWII. On the Island of Roi Namur, there were half buried Japanese emplacements include an underground hospital. They had basically taken a hut and buried it for use as a field hospital. Since necessity is the mother of invention, these tunnels, and the ones the Japanese dug beg the question: "What the Hel were we doing to each other that this was the only way to protect the wounded?"
Sad that the first thing to go in conflict is humanity.
