Unlike the Benghazi Committee, the Congressional investigation for Beirut compiled a series of substantive recommendations for force protection. It did find fault, but not because they discovered anything by themselves or found need to create fall guys. Rather, because they incorporated the DOD's own investigation into what went wrong.

I've finished reading through the Benghazi report. Set aside any issues of fault finding. Set aside happiness or anger that the committee failed to find substantive misbehaviors by top leaders. You have to ask yourself, we paid for this crap?

Findings are weak, recommendations lack specifics and substance, and the report fails to even offer a coherent narrative of events without contradicting itself. Even though the report was one-sided, as in the Democrats declined to participate in it, the Republicans couldn't even agree with themselves. Representatives Jordan and Pompeo had to tack on their own section at the end.

Congress' investigative power is supposed to improve policy and the allocation of funds, which this committee barely spent an effort to find real improvements. Just papered over that part of their responsibility by making vague and bland "recommendations".

We, the American People, got snookered.

Sir I feel the same way. Looking and comparison of the two investigations, Regan had a better group to deal with then compared to the opportunistic investigators we have now. To me, once they mentioned bringing in to testify someone who had a FB post, that was it. So two years, four million, 12 separate investigations, and the one thing that is a constant is HRC was negligent in her duties as SECSTATE. So have her report to 1SG to be counseled, and for him to inform her she will be part of the next round of QSP/QMP boards.

On February 9 1984 Sec Def ordered non- punitive letters of instruction be issued to Col Tim Geraghty and LtCol Larry Gerlach. Gerlach got his letter at the VA Hospital in Boston MA where he was being treated for severe wounds to his head. On the same day Major Albert Butler took his own life.
We lost nearly 300 Americans who died in Beirut on 23 October 1983. What did we accomplish? We lost 4 Americans in Benghazi. What did we accomplish??

SSG Warren Swan - I went to Honduras off and on from 1967, 1969, 1975-1979, 1981 but I did not go back again until 2011 when my Mom went there for her Dementia. She is from there and she will be buried there. It is 4th world but there is internet and wireless and everyone has a phone. They used what's up program to bypass the expensive phone monopolies. I now can call my family directly instead of using a friend with a HAM radio calling us by finding someone local in California with a phone patch. I did not know you were there. Were you at Soto Cano? I fly out of San Salvador or San Pedro Sula.

LTC (Join to see) - Sir Soto Cano in 2000 in the J6. I got there when monsoon season was over. I damn sure didn't want to leave. Tecegalpa(sp), was fun. Being on the staff, I'd be there twice or more a week.
I'm sorry to hear about your mom. I've gone through that with my grandfather, and it was not pretty, and it tore me up to see a proud man reduced to a shell of himself.

Over the last couple decades, it seems, politicians came to realize the value of prolonged spectacle to foster outrage, cause damage to their political opponents, and divert voter attention. The extent to which something becomes a spectacle does depend on media collusion, but since the media is all about ratings, this isn't hard to achieve. The juicier the scandal, the more coverage it will get. So, I don't think it's necessarily the case that prior legislators were more effective. They simply didn't try to get as much mileage out of scandals.

EDIT: Then again, there was Iran-Contra.

CPT John Sheridan - I guarded the USS Constitution at the Boston Navy Yard and put the ammo clip in my M-1 and the Od told me to remove the clip. He said he didn't want me to shoot anyone ..and I told him about having a loaded .45 Pistol at the Main Gate and he didn't respond. I think at the Main Gate we didn't have any barriers and there were a few trucks who were gate crashers & ordered to stop or be fired on occasions.

CPT John Sheridan - North was the fall guy for Regan. How was he unethical outside of taking the rap for the President?

SSG Warren Swan - He stole by using government funds to improve his personally owned real estate. He lied under oath. He was pardoned by President Bush, but he compromised his integrity and oath of office. For that, there is no pardon.
