My wife and I watch it every year, SGT (Join to see). She’s a Navy brat and her father was with the 6th Fleet, stationed in the Mediterranean. They lived in Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Riviera for three years! She likes to watch the race to remind her of the beauty of the French countryside.
Do us Army guys get duty stations like that? No!

Funny, when I was at HQUSCENTCOM I worked with a Naval officer (can't recall his name) who had a house on the French Riviera that they kept when reassigned after being stationed there. If we made any trips to Europe he would always take a couple days of leave at the end of the trip to go check the house.

My wife and her mother (now deceased, but a real pistol in her day) were driving in Villefranche one day and spotted John Wayne just walking down the street all by himself. My mother-in-law pulled over and yelled out, “Hey Duke, you want a ride?!” Apparently, he was tired of walking, because he got in and they took him where he was headed. They said that he was very friendly, they talked a good bit, and had a great time!
