Season 2, Episode 8 of the wildly successful mini-series Downton Abbey gives the Spanish flu pandemic the full treatment. It showed how fickle the illness treated people. One person seemed barely affected and then died horribly. Another person appeared to be at death's door and recovered! Timeframe was April, 1919.

I've always heard it started at Camp Funston on Ft Riley. There is a large marker there about the flu epidemic. I have friends who live in Ogden, less then a mile from the Funston site.
