In the current world order Russia is not a major power. They want to become one and that involves kicking over the apple cart because keeping the current power structures as they are is not going to allow them to become one. The people who will loose if they are successful are the current major powers, i.e. us, China...

Why is there any surprise about this? Every war we have been involved in since 1945, Russia has been helping the other side. What makes anyone think that would change just because Putin's buddy is in the White House?
