Let's keep in mind the last congress person to be shot was a Democrat (Gabby Giffords). It happens to both parties. Hopefully the shooter was able to communicate what his motivation was before he died. Great job by responding cops.

So she was shot in the face just for the hell of it? No animosity towards those lefty socialists? No anger out there at that time? Your memory is suspect......

SPC Erich Guenther - I think you just gave an example of what SSG Hartsfield is talking about.

SSgt Gary Andrews - Can you not read? She was shot by someone mentally ill and his motivation was her gender, because she was a women in political office........ not her politics. The Liberals distorted it into a Tea Party thing but he did not shoot her due to her politics nor his Tea Party affiliation. Regardless, assigning motivation to a mentally ill person is a Liberal trait..........like they are all walking zombies with no thought process, just waiting to be influenced by someone with violent thoughts............and my personal favorite, they need a rational justification for killing someone. C'mon, really........is that how mental illness works? Oh and I stand by what I said because it is 100% accurate.

SPC Erich Guenther - There we go. The mentally ill defense. He was a conspiracy theory, anti-government, pro-NRA nut case and his motivations was a combination of mental health driven by the crap he read and watched on the internet. Note we waited to find out more about the shooter before labeling him.
So why can't we wait for more details on this shooter's motive before applying the "Hate Campaign by the Media and Opposing Political Party" label on him? Do us a favor; wait for the facts and keep any political bias in closed circles. Respect the victims.

SSG Michael Hartsfield As the event has moved from the active shooter to the investigation phase, the question is becoming more to the point. Right now everyone is outraged that a member of the congress to which they belong was attacked. As time passes the vitriol will return, and it will be business as usual. You are absolutely right. I have been following a live feed of this morning's events, and people are hateful to each other. I saw a person comment that "All Democrats should lose their rights" Why would anyone even suggest that. I have also seen suggestions that democrats be banned altogether. I personally am in favor of dissolution of all political parties. Let politicians stand for the constituents who sent them to Washington, but that is not a topic for today. Today we should as a society be grateful that the only life lost in today's events was that of the attacker. We should be taking an extra moment to find our own humanity. I am not suggesting a massive kumbaya sing along. I am just saying that we don't have to tear each other down in disagreement. That video is pretty spot on. I know it is supposed to be applied to the bloods and crips in CA, but it can be readily applied to republicans and democrats in DC as well.

My first reaction was, I hope everyone is ok. My second was, who did get hurt and are they ok? My third, who did it? This led to speculating what could have happened while reports continued to come in. Was it terrorism, random, targeted? As information came in I learned a possible "white man" shot a GOP Congressman and his aides. This led to speculating again, but I continued to hold my thoughts to see what the conclusion came to (for all we know the Congressman slept with his wife). Now we know the man is a alleged Bernie fan who apparently hates Republicans. As a Republican you could say this concerns me slightly, to know someone could resort to violence against someone like myself simply because of my politics. I then consider the politics and the rhetoric which inspires one to resort to such violence. All we know is that the guy is a possible Bernie fan who wrote opinions on taxing the rich and how much he hates Republicans. I don't know what his position is on guns at this time, but I would imagine that if he's against them, he is also hypocrite on top of being a would-be murderer.
Had I been there and in a position to defend those who were shot, regardless of their political affiliation, I would do so. Stating an opinion about the guy and criticizing his politics after the fact is not an example of someone putting political factions over the lives of fellow Americans. When Sen Giffords was shot, I felt the same way and I would have reacted the same way in attempting to protect Giffords.

As would I but in looking at the comments here and on the Interwebs, we seem to be in the minority. It pisses me off to the nth degree of pissability that so many people that either wouldn't do the same or with gleeful anticipation Tweet about the "evil/tolerance of (insert group). This ish has gotten so old.

I doubt that. People are reacting to what they know now from the reports. Had this event happened around a majority of those on this forum, I would imagine anyone of them would have tried to do their part to protect an innocent citizen, regardless of their politics. It's not like any of them know all the Congressmen and women by heart enough to decide not to protect them during an attack. Nor would they start a survey to figure out whether they should protect another based on their political beliefs. Such people would be cowards in my book. A line I see a lot here and which most would agree to is "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it."

SSG Michael Hartsfield - It is a team mentality. It has to be. What else do you have? Its not politics - its YOUR TEAM. YAY TEAM! GO TEAM! If it was politics you'd debate. But then you'd realize that your vote doesn't count and you'd want it changed. Right? So to keep you from having too much time on your hands, both parties foster a team/cheerleader mentality.
This is why I'm neither rep or dem.
