Sgt Eric Mitchell There's a Reason for Damage Control Training. You Hope Never to Put those Skills to the Test but it appears that they were applied very recently.

I remember a very large increase in the quality of DC training after USS COLE. It's one of the few times I have seen where throwing a ton of money at a problem actually paid off.

LT Brad McInnis - I was DCPO for My Division on USS California CGN-36 and USS Arkansas CGN-41. I'm Glad that the Equipment that I Maintained, was Never Needed.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - Yeah, unfortunately I have to use a lot of mine both as DCA and CHENG. Sailors pulling together to get dangerous job done for the safety of their shipmates never ceased to amaze me...

LCDR Rabbah Rona Matlow - Lose more Sailors my ass. That training is why they didn't lose ALL of the Sailors, and the ship to boot.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - No argument from me there, CTO1. I'm still half a mind that it was a deliberate act, I just can't explain that uturn any other way. That and the DDG's failure to evade.

SN Greg Wright - I've been in a lot of close quarters maneuvering, and had some close calls, but I always maintained situational awareness, using moboard or a scopehead plot. Part of the problem today is that everyone is too busy "playing video games." I've seen it first hand on a ship with 56H radar repeaters, that could automatically calculate CPA. That system went down and all the SWOS trained officers were at a loss. I got a popsicle stick and grease pencil and scopeheaded on the Feruno radar and was asked by a non SWO LT why I was writing on the radar. SMH!!!

The skippers of today are from those year groups. They've never had to rely on paper navigation or monitoring, and they don't have the old school seamanship skills...
