One of the things I like about you CPT Jack Durish is how you can be serious and still toss a subtle joke in that does hit the heart of the matter.

If the children belong to the state, why didn't they pay all the Dr. bills and pay for the food I provided to my son when he was growing up, or pay for the clothes and shoes that he needed? They need to rethink about single payer insurance here.

Wow, yea I would be demanding financial reimbursement for the cost of pushing my kids out, the cost of the doctor catching it! Which is abseoerate bill! And the all the other costly expenses thatvcame with my child not being mine. Since when did human life become a possession!?....

To answer your question, the "left / progressive / liberal" of whatever era have always viewed people as possessions in one form or another. Slavery is a word with serious negative imagery today (rightly so) but the people who view things this way just change to words to try and fit the new narrative to try to make them look good. Certain people are trying to get the illegals permission to stay, so that THEY can have cheap labor and undercut the unions who have raised their prices so high, the same unions they used to actually support to put indipendant workers out of the work force if they did not toe THEIR lines. America is supposed to be a Meritocracy, where one gets promotions based on capability, but that threatens them because in many cases the people in those positions are not actually capable at the work, just at stealing the work of others or putting themselves in the limelight at the right time, but when something goes wrong, they disappear like the mist.
