I've never been overly impressed by "smarts". The smartest Presidents in my lifetime were Nixon and Carter and look how much good "smarts" did for them. And, if Obama was truly the smartest man in the room. please save us from any more of that.

Smart is often used, incorrectly, as a synonym intelligence, as dump is for stupid, or lack of same. No matter what you think of the guy, he's obviously highly intelligent. Smart, maybe not so much.

Some people equate financial success with intellect. I guess they believe because someone is rich they must be smart which is certainly not always the case. Skill, luck, and opportunity are key ingredients with the latter being determinant factor for Trump.
