I believe she was sunk as the US was pursuing her first strategic goal in the Pacific War: Protecting Australia and her shipping lanes as the Japanese occupied islands north of Australia and commenced the invasion of Australia. This naval battle was a tactical draw, but it was a strategic win. Japan's naval ability to manuever in the Coral Sea was stopped.
