Excellent article and I enjoyed it. Would have loved to seen him mention training, since that is what always seems to get cut during budget constraints. And more on "cradle to grave" understanding (don't just buy the capability--buy the logistics and training at the same time). Thank you!

Nothing on training. Nothing on budget constraints.
Focus of article seems to be on the individual instead of the unit. As one who lost out in the up-or-out system, the manning pyramid needs to be maintained. If the best and the brightest remain until social security kicks in, there will be generational gaps on service demands. The money or the work isn't there for the best and brightest. Plus, there are always new projects that the old experts are no longer experts in.
There are times in the service when stripes and specialties are unimportant. When I called an "All Hands On Deck" to load 5" projectiles and powder casings, all types and grades go to work. Even junior officers are put to work. There are times when all the new HR management techniques are ignored for basic swabby or grunt work.
