PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - The Soviet Space Program has been kept away from the news media especially in the early years of the space race with the U.S. Space Program. There is probably no way to know how many Soviet astronauts died in those early years of the program. With the media coverage of the U.S. Space Program in our more open society Americans knew when U.S. astronauts died either on the launch pad by fire, explosion after launch or on reentry into the earth's atmosphere.
