SGT (Join to see), I met and worked with then Major Ed(die) Shirron in March, 1983, who actually photographed the event from OP No. 5. "[Then] Captain Shirron (Bonifas' replacement), Captain Shaddix, the joint duty officer's driver, the joint duty officer, and the OP No. 5 guard witnessed the attack from OP No. 5 and recorded the incident with both a black and white camera, which ran out of film, and Shaddix's 35 mm camera with a telephoto lens."
Shirron was assigned to the G-3 Plans Division of VII U.S. Corps at Kelley Barracks in Stuttgart, Germany (then the FRG) when I met him in 1983. I was assigned to the 15th Psychological Operations Battalion and we had been attached to the Plans Division for the conduct of WINTEX/Cimex, an annual CPX. He was incredibly intense, and a no nonsense officer. He never laughed that I ever saw. Only years later did I find out that he was part of this awful atrocity. It may well have been the reason for his intensity.
He retired as a Colonel, and currently serves both in the cast and the crew of the Topeka Civic Theatre.
The photos are of Shirron (at left and fairly current) and OP No. 5.
