Good article on why the US never got it early in the war on the use of tanks. What really peaks the interest in this is our perceived role of the tank destroyer. How radically different was the German concept of the use and place of the tank destroyer from where we were at by 1942.

Sometimes nations manufacture poor weapons systems, tactics, and doctrine which proved costly. The German WWI AAR solved immobility with their tanks for maneuver warfare.

I see you have read Beltran Cooper's book. In reality Patton, actually even Ike had zero say in when and if weapons systems were deployed, although they did push for needs. The M-26 Pershing started being developed in late 43 early 44 after the prototypes of the M-6, T-23 and T26 failed to meet standards.
