Is this deja vu all over again? Wasn't the Phantom a "joint striker fighter", a one size fits all that was supposed to save money by not developing different warplanes for each service? McNamara. He's the one who came up with that, wasn't he?

It probably is true since the F-4 Phantom start off as a Navy fighter and later evolved into the Air Force fighter and wild weasel.

We seem to never learn that one size fits all fighters just don't. Heck I spent 10 years in another, the F-111.

LTC (Join to see) - Also some genius decided with missiles etc the F4 didn't need guns, well it did, get in too close the missiles were ineffective and couldn't lock on, the guns were needed to survive. The enemy had guns and the advantage close in . The Air Force had to add a gun pod to correct that, the Marines and Navy didn't and were still more vulnerable. No had bothered asking the people that flew these aircraft, the Operational unit Pilots. they knew they needed the guns.

Reminds me of the B-29 whose m often fatal, teething problems were not done until well after the end of WII,
It is anzing how many people want out aircrews to got to war with antique and incapable aircraft. I guess tax cuts trump live pilots?

LTC (Join to see) - So the alternative is to send people into combat with aircraft designed in the late 60s. Using the F-35 for close air support is dumb, but that is a very small part of the missions it is required to do. The F-16 is a multi-role fighter whose mission the F-35 is destined to take, It has worked out pretty well for the last 45 years of so but that design is getting very tired.

1stSgt Nelson Kerr I just say keep the F-15 but get the improved model that the Saudis and the Singapore people have and add our own secret stuff back into it. Fly those alongside the F-35. Keep the F-16 and F-18 as well. Kind of like a combined arms team.
If the F-35 can see and give the information with the global hawk to the F-15 SA, the F-15 SA can help shoot them down as well especially if they have this many missiles. I don't know about range but do they still have Phoenix missiles in the inventory? Those things can Reach Out And Touch Somebody badly. Okay, the Phoenix missiles been out of service since 2004. Is there a replacement for that?

LTC (Join to see) - That F-15 if you will notice requires an F-22 or F-35 working with it if it is to be effective It is an arsenal ship equivalent carrying missiles for other aircraft to guide and find targets for. Also many of our F-15 would need to be rebuilt almost from scratch the youngest of the them are quite old and past well worn.

Again would you want to go into combat f driving a Sherman tank against a modern opponent. The Sherman is l closer in age to the M-1 when it was new than the F-15 is to the F-22.
