PO3 Bob McCord Well, I'll share with you something: I'm a member of the American Newswomen's Club. And here is how it goes:
1> reader of press wants a certain spin and sensationalism that sells. (Note that the longest-lasting story in history required a messiah hanging from a cross and then getting resurrected... sheesh, human nature, even then, it HAD to be a sensation or it's yesterday's news!)

2> The ADVERTISERS follow what the reader/viewer reads. That is first the reader and second the corporate machine directing what we read. Some of us read liberal, some of us read conservative, I read foreign news outlets because their advertisers don't give a rats what WE read, we're not their target market. They like real news because they are bordered up against each other and if they get bad info... it's BAD! A free press us meant to INFORM us and be a check on government. That's the purpose and it is WHY that's the very first amendment!)

3> Next: now that the advertiser is following the readers and viewers and what sells to THAT audience (and I have bought AND sold advertising as a publisher) is what guess who: THE PUBLISHER has to publish in order to keep the doors open. And THAT MEANS...

4> The JOURNALIST has to write what SELLS or else they lose their job! That means:
A) the publisher calls the shots as dictated by:

B> the advertiser

C> who advertises to the AUDIENCE who demands what THEY want to read... and therefore:

Like it or not, ALL US publishing that is supported by advertising is directed by guess who?

We the People. Point a finger and three point back. Some viewers (and some advertisers) don't like Fox.

I, like Eisenhower, whose entire branch of my family (and myself) are now Independent party. This manner of reporting disgusts us. This partisan bickering disgusts us. It's repulsive, it's uncivil and NOW, I will tell you about the publishing that IS NOT DRIVEN BY ADVERTISING and what EXACTLY that looks like.

Read it and weep:

Peer reviewed journals of any stripe, but most especially medical research. Ready?

Peer reviewed journals MAY NOT ACCEPT ADVERTISERS because that is considered BRIBERY and slanting our research. So... what next:

That means: NO ONE, except maybe, MAYBE the Editor in Chief are paid.

1> The writers -- RESEARCHERS-- are NOT paid. In FACT, they "pay to publish"! That means: if YOU do research, you have to, if your piece is accepted, pay THOUSANDS of dollars to have your work publish. That can be as much or MORE than $5,000 for your peer-reviewed article to appear in a journal that you MUST publish in for your research to ever a) get read and b) GET USED! c) get archived by: that National Institutes of Health, the World Health Organization, the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of Defense, the Veterans Health Administration or other researchers cannot read it. (Unless one of the government agencies helped on the research... that doesn't happen in prevalence!)

AND: The researcher who PAID TO PUBLISH LOSES their COPYRIGHTS.

AND: For AT LEAST the first year, if not more, the READERS (other researchers, doctors, the government medical system, HHS, the VA docs.) will have to pay an EASY $35 or more just to READ your data. I research. Our entire medical knowledge base suffers because of THIS!

But THIS is the only way we can keep:
A) readers to not skew what we publish
B) publishers not to skew what we publish
C) researchers to make sure their findings are sound.

But, you know, a grant might be only $100,000. $5,000 will go to publish data WE NEED, but can't read unless we are members of the association whose journal published it. Like, I cannot read JAMA or any journal whose professional organization I am not a member of. But I research multiple crossover disciplines... that touch PTSD/TBI and DRUMROLL Veteran suicide. But my access (and almost everyone else's) will be a year old at least.

While 40,000 Americans die every day of suicide and MORE than 22 Veterans a day (we don't have reliable figures... why? Read above and go figure.)

So, bitch not about the journalists.

Bitch not about the publishers.

Bitch not about the advertisers.

Bitch about readers.

AND, if you're a member of one party or another and you favor a conservative paper or outlet more than a liberal one or vice versa...

Dear reader, hold your arm STRAIGHT up in the air. Bend your wrist inward and point your finger down at the top of your OWN HEAD! Now point 50,000 times up and down REALLY fast.

Peer... reviewed... journal... it has a term: EVIDENCE-BASED!

It... is ALL WE READ!

Nobody pays for it but US! And we do NOT direct what's in there.

But well, no one's peer reviewing our news outlets. Guess who WOULD if they ONLY COULD?

Journalists. If you professionally know journalists, no one -- not one of them -- wants to be steered by what readers will read or else loss their jobs. No journalist went into the business to be told what to report.

And, oh... by the way, the most sought after journalists who have years and years of experience... yeah, well, they've usually been employed by both sides of the political fence.

Follow the citizen demand (or lack thereof in the case of our pitiful elected officials who are bought by their campaign contribitors... corporations. Why? Because WE THE PEOPLE allow that.

Repeat downward head pointing gesture above.

Follow the money. It's the ONLY thing running this country right now... and big fat, big fat, biiiiiiigggggg fat mouths on both sides of the aisle getting zilch done but causing more divisiveness among us than perhaps in history.

Lifespan of a goverment: about 200-250 years. The year 2026 is OUR Nation's 250th.

If we make it, that is. The indications aren't good.

And I think the Bradley has a gyro like the Abrams tank to keep the gun pointed at the Target as the ship was moving.
