Fort Polk, Vernon Parish receive Army Community Partnership Award

The Joint Readiness Training Center and Fort Polk and Vernon Parish communities received the Department of the Army's 2018 Army Community Partnership Award Dec. 4 in a ceremony at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Fort Polk Progress President Michael Reese, Fort Polk Garrison Commander Col. Jarrett A. Thomas II, Leesville Mayor Rick Allen, Rosepine Mayor Donna DuVall and Vernon Parish Police Jury President James Tuck were present to accept the award.

Seems weird to me about this reward. Of all the years I lived there, Vernon Parish/Leesville, was never a good thing for the Fort. Many places in Leesville over the years had been Off Limits to soldiers! The town never really had much to offer the soldiers there. Some of the upper enlisted families, not single soldiers, may have adapted to the town. Most lived elsewhere and would rather drive farther to the Fort than to live their. I guess things have changed recently!

The town pretty much closed down a few times, because of no business from the Fort. That's one of the towns that has the "old money" families! Some of those families have moved away, died off, gotten smarter. I'm sure you've been around some of those types of towns. Glad to hear it's getting better.

PO2 Kevin Parker - Leesville had nowhere to go, but up. I was stationed at Polk in '69 and again in '72 finding nothing had changed from the time I left until I returned. Soldiers still referred to it as 'Diseaseville' full of run down buildings and a citizenry moderately civil toward the soldiers; maybe to some extent, it might have been deserved. Glad to hear it is seemingly improving.

LTC Wayne Brandon - We always called it Sleezeville :) Of course I was a dependent and lived in DeRidder twice. I joined the Navy from there and also married my wife from there. :) So I have family there. I'm glad to hear they are actually working with instead of against the Fort.

PO2 Kevin Parker - Hah! I had forgotten about it's other nickname. DeRidder was one of the towns we were allowed to visit - the others being Shreveport and Lake Charles which were okay.
