I'd say the biggest miscalculation we made at that time was that tanks for for engaging infantry and tank destroyers would be for taking out AFVs. The reality is that both were often in positions where they needed to do what the other was designed for.

As it turns out a properly designed gun can do both jobs as long as there is enough storage capacity to carry HE and AP rounds in their various configurations.

It takes immense bravery to fight a foe that you can not destroy but can destroy your tank. Sometimes a platoon of US tanks would conduct attack by fire by three tanks and the fourth maneuvers to get a flank shot. I am disappointed that the Pershing was not fielded until the very end of the war.
