It's hard to win a counterinsurgency war without good intelligence, the people support the insurgents, stopping logistics, and fighting the enemy. The terrain supports the Taliban as we tend to maneuver on flat land that is surrounded by mountains, and it's difficult to find them.
Alexander the Great, the Mongols, and Russians killed millions of Afghans, but the Afghans were still able to regain their identity in the end. What is damning is most revolutions require a peer size armies to win revolutions, but the Taliban does not need that.
