STOW, Ohio - Our exclusive 5 On Your Side Investigation has uncovered serious concerns about a U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs program meant to protect disabled veterans.
When a disabled veteran can no longer manage their affairs, the VA appoints a fiduciary to oversee the veteran’s benefits, pay their bills on time, and balance their budget.
Our investigation found, since 2012, the VA has barred 752 fiduciaries after finding they misused disabled veterans benefits, including a Northeast Ohio prosecutor.

People stealing money from Disabled Veterans is completely unamerican. These people need to be prosecuted and ordered to pay restitution.

As I am helping an elderly Veteran and his spouse apply for benifits, it was brought to my attention that on the Caregiver application (I'm sure that is not the proper name of the VA form) there is a section that asks if the Veteran can manage their own finances, and to be careful how it is answered. Now I know why.
In this case the Veteran can manage his finances so it's not an issue, but this post is a great info point for those who may have to fill out the "Caregiver application" in future and the ramifications of the answers. This reenforces why I always direct a Veteran to a certified VSO from one of the service associations to help fill out forms and give direction and advice throughout the entire application process.
