Marsquakes, Experiment Problems, and More! Mars InSight Update

This is a joint post by Bill Pierce and I to provide you with some added detail of NASA's Mars Insight Lander...

"Back near the end of 2018, NASA InSight lander had successfully landed on the surface of Mars. The Mars insight lander began by taking pictures of its surroundings, and determining where the best place to but its instruments would be. The Mars lander would spend a couple weeks before it placed the SEIS experiment on the surface of Mars. The SEIS experiment is a very sensitive seismometer, that you can learn more about on one of my videos.

At this time, the SEIS experiment had listened to the winds on Mars, and NASA JPL released a video showing what it would sound like if you were on the surface. Following these events, the Mars insight lander places the HP3 (HP-cubed) experiment on Mars. HP3 is a heat flow probe that is trying to record the temperature underneath the Martian regolith (dirt).

Once placed on the surface, HP3 ran into some difficulties deploying its probe and got stuck in the early stages of the digging process. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the German Aerospace Center have been working together to try and address this issue, and hopefully, they will determine what the problem is soon.

After deploying these instruments, the SEIS experiment detected an Earthquake on Mars or a Marsquake. This was a very subtle seismic event. More recently, InSight took pictures of a Sunrise on Mars, and a Sunset on Mars." Marian Wolf
