PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - yep, in the dark cold of the icy ocean with being so far from rescue is not a very pleasant thought.

I read a fascinating article that said that the Titanic had a fire in her forward coal bunker that had been burning since she left Belfast. There were pictures that show scortches on the hull. It was this that weakened the steel of the hull, and it was also the reason why she was travelling at full speed - for fear of running out of fuel as the fire consumed it.
