It was carrying ammunition. Didn't they survey the ship recently and the holes were exploding outwards in some places? I have not seen the video but I am seeing YouTube videos Refuting the ammunition explosion theory.... I think that was pretty much a given in those days, any ship making a crossing would be carrying war supplies.
