I do not know if this is true, so it probably isn't. I've been told that one or more of the big three automakers has a test section of roadway where the electrical current is embedded in the roadway and the cars operate almost like a kid's electric race car set. Once the system is created it will cause a huge decrease in the energy cost per mile. But the national investment to reengineer the roadways would be astronomical.

The other proposal was to have a broad mix of vehicles that we have now, but expand the rail system and use rail "car ferries" for inter-city long distance travel.

Very interesting. I believe I read something about electric roadways but I don’t remember much more than the name. I will keep an eye out for it when I’m scanning my technical journals.

SFC (Join to see) - If you find something please post it. I've conducted a half-hearted internet search, but admittedly not one of my most serious efforts to find out more.

I think it is a fascinating idea. I wonder about problems like subway third rails. Is it safe for humans and animals to traverse such a road? How would such a road handle thermal expansion/contraction without damaging the conductive elements? What Happens at intersections?

Maj John Bell - I post many transportation related articles. I worked for PennDOT over 20 years and my heart is in roads and bridges. I am a member of ASCE and several institutes they sponsor so I receive a lot of content.

Thank you. That’s exactly what I thought as I read it! I was struck be the even keel comments, even if I don’t agree with them 100%. Yes, I agree, a very interesting comprehensive read.
