I had to give a subordinate an order from the chief nurse about his hair growth needing to be cut. I found out that he was Jewish and they have a 2 week time that they are unable to cut their hair. When questioned by the hospital commander why I didn't follow thru with the order I explained to him that he was Jewish and it was a religious observance on his part. The Col. said OK and I heard nothing after that. His two weeks ended and the man complied to regulations.

If they allowed him to enlist like that they need to hold to what they promised him This changing the rules in midstream, doesn't work

I remember a time when upon advancement to E-4 a sailor could grow a beard. Well, he was authorized to grow one I should say. This shouldn't be any sort of problem now. They had already unleashed that genie. Someone subsequently revoked the policy but it probably had to do with preference rather than utilitarian basis.

SSG Paul Headlee Depending on the Command You could grow one sooner. Tradition for Submariners for a Long Time and for Some Reason I remember Many on Adak growing beards.
