As someone who completed a degree in nutrition right at the beginning of the last administration, I can tell you most dietitians were very disappointed when they rolled back the guidelines on healthiness in school lunches. The thing is, school lunches are the only decent source of remotely healthy food for many children, especially in lower income schools. There was much backlash when the Obama admin pushed healthier lunches, but don't publicly funded schools have a responsibility to feed children healthy lunches? Most parents believe what a podcaster or doctor on TV says is healthy and don't know or have the time or money to feed their children properly and school should be the one place they are fed healthy meals. I'm sure with some more work on taste and after more adjustment time, the healthy guidelines could have worked, but when soda and McDonald's waits at home, what do you think kids will choose? They should be introduced to as many healthy things as possible while their neural pathways are so readily adapted to it. Great share though! It's something I have always felt strongly about, coming from a Title 1 school district and having many food allergies.

What disturbs me is we are just starting to talk about millions of adults and kids that go hungry. They got lost in all the acrimonious politics of this country. That condition was not lost to me on Thanksgiving and Christmas. I donated to a local food bank. I am not trying to brag. I have my defects, but just wanted to point out how we can help each other.
I don’t know if you are cognizant of American generosity after WWII. Private individuals bought large food packages to be sent to war torn Europe. Millions of tons to sustain hungry Europeans. If you want I can elaborate further.

I agree with you. I think it's disturbing how there are people making billions but we have children and adults starving. I also donate to the local food banks and volunteer when I can (unfortunately not much as of late), but I wish it wasn't just people who want to help out of the good of their hearts who helped...

Angela Bates - This country is so splintered. It’s fractured. Every day we are inundated with absolutely stupid events and news at the National level. The country has small fires burning everywhere. The current social environment precludes teamwork, cooperation, and communication. It is crazy now. There were times when we Americans united for a for a common cause. Hunger, poverty, and justice are lost in the chaos. It makes me wonder who can turn this ship around? We lost so much and continue to do so.

MAJ Ken Landgren - I think it would take someone without an agenda attacking anyone. So many recent platforms have been "Do you hate those guys as much as I do? Let's do what we can to make them angry." We need more "What is hurting us as a society? How can we come together to make it better?" It's become so petty and not remotely helpful. There are people trying to do good, but just as many mocking them for trying. Sadly, many do not care if others are suffering if they aren't. Empathy is hard to come by...

Yeah I read about a boy whose lunch money was depleted. They took his lunch away and I think he got a PBJ. I think it was on his birthday. Poor kid. There are people out there who will say the parents should have made better choices in life. Hardasses I say.
