In an interview yesterday, Biden said that American troops would stay in Afghanistan beyond the August 31 deadline if that move is necessary in order to ensure Americans are able to evacuate.
Right now there are between 10,000 and 15,000 Americans scrambling to leave the country that was overtaken by the Taliban. Additionally, there are more than 50,000 Afghans who want to escape
“The commitment holds to get everyone out that, in fact, we can get out and everyone who should come out. And that’s the objective. That’s what we’re doing now. That’s the path we’re on. And I think we’ll get there,” he said.
He continued: “It depends on where we are and whether we can get… ramp these numbers up to [5,0000 to] 7,000 a day coming out. If that’s the case, they’ll all be out.”
Biden’s guesswork is not even slightly reassuring right now. At last count, an estimated 2,000 people were able to evacuate within a 24-hour period.

This has been the worst political and military debacle, which will adversely effect the United States of America for many years to come... We are now seen by the World as a Country that doesn't stand by its citizens nor its allies... China most likely take this as a sign that they can now take over Taiwan, and the middle east countries and their militaristic peoples, will become bold and terroristic to countries throughout the world... The leader of our Country does not even know how many American Citizens are in Afghanistan... and the administration has no interdepartmental ability to gather that information... I am surely not the only person that has problems with what has been set in motion, but I certainly am not and will not be the last one to voice my opinion...

I agree. This mess won't be cleaned up by the end of this month. I doubt it will be cleaned up by the end of the year. And the repercussions are going to be around a long time to come.

Well said. Only comment I'd have is that it's probably unrealistic for any US government agency, especially the president, to know how many Americans are in any country. I had a friend who was an attache in Turkey who was responsible for tracking such things and he always said at best they would be plus or minus around 3000 people.
